Adult learner enrollment at community colleges is pushing the boundaries of what is considered non-traditional. Adult learners bring multiple strengths to their lives as students, along with multiple stressors. Success can be a long and winding road. Learn who our adult learners are, what their stressors and needs are, and how to apply adult learning theory to help facilitate their success.

Fostering Student Success in Math Class thru Interactive and Engaging Lessons

Math instructors have a significant impact on their students' futures.  While technology has revolutionized the way education is delivered, this presentation will focus on how you can enhance student engagement and success in your math lessons. You will learn about innovative teaching techniques that incorporate custom and textbook-aligned assignments, enhancing open educational resources (OER) with technology, and increasing student engagement with Derivita’s SpotCheck. Join us as we explore ways to bring your math lessons to life and foster a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts in your students.

In this session, Roxana Dita will share her strategies for engaging students in collaborative, hands-on learning through group work activities. A good group work activity can lead students to a deeper understanding of a topic and help mitigate anxiety and passivity when solving problems. Participants will receive useful tips for implementing group work in their classrooms.

“Encouraging Diverse Learners to Take Ownership through Classroom Engagement”
Scot Pruyn, Professor of Mathematics, Clackamas Community College, Oregon City, OR;
Karen Gaines, Faculty Emeritus, St. Louis Community College, St. Louis, MO; and,
Julie Phelps, Professor of Mathematics, Valencia College, Orlando, FL

This interactive workshop will model active learning in the classroom. Strategies for engaging diverse learners will be highlighted by providing participants the opportunity to experience some sample mathematics activities first hand. A vast number of resources will be shared that are available on myAMATYC and through other sources. There will be time allotted to answer questions and to discuss next steps as participants determine how the ideas presented fit into their classrooms.
